Alison Brown

Alison Brown is not your typical banjo player.

The loud, brash sound and unique structure of the five-string banjo makes it a particularly challenging instrument to play, but that didn’t scare her. If anything, the challenge simply proved another source of inspiration for Brown, who is revered as one of today’s finest progressive banjo players. Unlike most banjo players today, however, you will rarely find her in a conventional bluegrass setting. Instead, she is known for leading an ensemble that successfully marries a broad array of roots-influenced music like folk, jazz, Celtic and Latin.  The Harvard graduate, Compass Records co-founder, and GRAMMY Award-winning musician/composer/producer has changed the way we all think about the banjo by muting the usual harsh overtones and extraneous noises, and instead emphasizing the sweetness and melodicism. In her hands the banjo truly sings, as she plays both the words as well as the melody.

Alison Brown

Alison Brown

She doesn’t play the banjo. Alison Brown plays music on the banjo.

In the instrumental food chain, the five-string banjo is one of the more dominant beasts: loud, brash and very hard to tame. In 1945, Earl Scruggs made the biggest leap in harnessing its raw power, bringing a revolutionary precision of touch and depth of tone. Thousands of three-finger style banjo players have since made their marks, but none has cut such a path or moved so far along it as has Alison Brown.

The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra

Southern traditions are formed under pressure, seasoned with age, and extravagantly presented at just the right moment. Whether great bottles of bourbon, literary masterpieces like Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, or green jackets from The Masters at Augusta; tradition status is reserved only for the truly great. Such is the case for The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra. Southern gents Jeremy Davis and Clay Johnson met in the 7th grade and have been best friends ever since. Their musical collaboration began in Junior High but continued through High School, College, and a move with their young families from the Louisiana bayou to the haunted streets of Savannah, GA where a new Southern tradition is emerging.

Hits & Grins

Hits and Grins features three accomplished singer/songwriters performing original songs both serious and comedic, and sharing the stories of how and when they were written.

Larry’s Country Diner

RFDTV’s highest rated entertainment and variety show is hitting the road. They’re packing their bags, climbing in the old food truck and heading your way. You’ll meet the entire cast of characters from Larry Black the owner of the diner, to Renae the waitress, Jimmy Capps the Sheriff, Keith Bilbrey the announcer and everyone’s favorite church lady, Nadine. Along the way they’ll be picking up a music legend or two and bringing them along. So sit back and enjoy the music the way it used to sound, a little laid back conversation, and a whole lot of laughs.

The Malpass Brothers

As children, music was all they ever wanted to do. Afternoons found them at their granddad’s general store soaking up the music from his huge collection of 45s from a long discarded jukebox. By age 9 Christopher had earned his first talent show trophy by walking on stage and singing a spot-on rendition of Elvis’s All Shook Up – leg shake included. The day high school ended for Taylor, he boarded a plane to join his brother already on the road as the opening act for the legendary Merle Haggard. They toured with “Mr. Merle” for the next 7 years where they were schooled in the art and craft of country music.

Mandy Barnett

An uncompromising singer whose style is rooted in the classic country of Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Webb Pierce, and Brenda Lee, Mandy Barnett’s keen interpretive sense enables her to delve into a song, study the intricacies of its emotional content, and render a powerful performance through her full-bodied voice. Her torchy delivery on her contemporary yet retro-sounding country and pop-tinged material harkens back to the likes of all-time great female singers and timeless sounds.

Mandy has starred as Patsy Cline in the musical production Always…Patsy Cline at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on and off since 1994 and is a frequent guest on the Grand Ole Opry.

Next Generation Leahy

Building on over three generations of Leahy musicianship, Doug Leahy, together with his wife Jennifer and their children, are keeping those traditions alive through music, song, and dance.

Doug, as a member of the Canadian Celtic group “Leahy” and Jennifer, having played music throughout her life, both understand the joy and exhilaration only music can provide. It is no wonder then that their children understand innately that music will be a huge part of their lives. Even the smallest children feel the music pulsing through their veins. They are drawn to it. They are passionate about it.
