Drumstruck, the first interactive drum-theatre experience, presents exhilarating traditional African beats, and an incredibly talented cast with uncontainable, explosive energy. It has been hailed “STOMP meets The Lion King,” by critics at the Edinburgh Fringe. This interactive music and dance extravaganza was created by South African entrepreneur Warren Lieberman and Kathy-Jo Wein. The show creates a sense of Africa that is undeniably genuine and heartfelt. South African music and culture play a significant part in the show and is inter-woven with West African rhythms to give it a truly unique flavor. Drumstruck takes its audiences on a journey to Africa through drums, gumboot dancing, Zulu warrior dance and song. Each audience member is provided with their own djembe and gets to play and sing along with the show, representing the sharing of music embodied in the African spirit.
Drumstruck is based on the corporate team building performance group Drum Café which brought together companies through playing the djembe as a means of uniting people from different races in corporate South Africa. In 2002, because of the demand, Drumstruck was written in order to open the show to audiences outside of the corporate world. The first show was at the Theatre on Mandela square in Johannesburg. Since then Drumstruck toured China and Australia before coming to New York City in 2005 where it played 640 performances Off Broadway at Dodger Stages (now New World Stages). Drumstruck is so engaging that it has been a smash hit for ten years in Japan, playing to sold-out theatres and receiving standing ovations at every show. This traditional show rooted in African culture provides the audience with an hour of interactive fun, an extravaganza – that is unforgettable and ideal for the whole family. Drumstruck returned to the U.S. spring 2019 for a four-week engagement of at Dollywood Theme Park in Tennessee where they performed consistanly to full capacity houses of 1000, three times a day with over 75,000 attendees (that’s 150,000 hands playing our audience drums) that got to enjoy the interactive experience — many saw the show multiple times. The Company even got the honor to share the stage with Dolly Parton herself who declared “I’m dumbstruck for Drumstruck!”
